Paper Grand features recordings of a piano that has been prepared by placing bits of paper between the hammers and strings. This simple technique creates a percussive buzzing sound, adding a bright little flappy dimension to the piano. Not overly flappy.

With a well sounding Bechstein Grand Piano in the studio, we have had plenty of opportunities to experiment with different methods of preparing the piano, to gain a wider span of pianosound. This research has emerged from a desire to both deepen our knowledge of the piano and its musical possibilities and to develop a personal solo idiolect on the instrument. To put small pieces of paper right where the hammer strikes, is a very cool trick. Especially in music with an upper tempo or percussive nature.
