MARXOPHONE
ORCHESTRA
The Marxophone is a wide flat zither, sized right for playing on the lap. Attached to the lower bridge is an array of hammer-like string bounce mechanism.
Construction
Each hammer has heads made of wood or metal, positioned above the melody strings on flexible arms.
The instrument was patented in 1912 by Henry Charles Marx, marketed as a novelty instrument to play popular music of the time.
The elasticity of the arm leads to it repeatedly bouncing on the string, creating a quick tremolo effect for the duration the player keeps the hammer lever pressed down.
