The Selmer Pianotron
(aka Weltmeister Claviset) is a rare piece of music history, standing out as the only known electric piano produced in East Germany (GDR) during the Cold War era. Manufactured by the long-established accordion company Weltmeister in Klingenthal.
Developed around 1963, the Pianotron was well-used within the Eastern Bloc. Due to Cold War restrictions, it was difficult to acquire in the West until the fall of the Berlin Wall.
If you buy one on ebay, you should know that it will need a lot of time and work to get the keys to play properly. The mechanic are made of plastic, that breaks easily.

Similar in concept to its Western counterparts like the Hohner Pianet and Cembalet, the Claviset is an electromechanical keyboard.
Its sound generation relies on flat metal tines that are plucked – from a plastic mechanical cunstruction, and then amplified by electromagnetic pickups.

It is a Kontakt sample library that recreates the unique sound and character of the vintage Selmer Pianotron, an early electric piano from the 1960s, also branded as the Weltmeister Claviset .
The direct sound, coming from the instruments sounds kinda crappy, so as we always do…, we drove it through some great amps, and recorded from there.
It’s an East German electromechanical piano from the 1960s. Unlike the more famous Wurlitzer or Rhodes, it uses a plucking mechanism where a plastic mechanism pluck metal reeds (flat tines) whose vibrations are captured by electromagnetic pickups.
