SOUNDS LIKE :

PAPER GRAND : A piano with pieces of cigarette-paper and Japanese rice paper, between the strings and the hammers, creating a delicately uplifting piano sound.

CORK PIANO : Small pieces of cork to achieve a desired tonal sonority. For the lower strings, we had upto three pieces of cork squeezed between each string.

SPZZ GRAND : Performed with many long lines of jewelry chain on top of the strings. This ain’t no concert grand, fresh off the boat from Germany. This is a piano that’s seen some things. Got some stories etched into its old wood.

MALLET GRAND : Small Rubber Mallets softly hitting the strings: A somewhat gamelan-esque sound.

“Wrongtools consistently creates beautiful libraries for Kontakt, and Mule Piano is their latest work. This is a piano instrument that was prepared before recording with materials like corks, chains, paper, felt, and rubber. It’s great that you can save yourself the trouble of doing this yourself!

Compared to some other libraries that offer a “prepared piano,” each of the 23 patches here is designed to offer its own unique world and maintain a consistent character across the entire keyboard. So, if you’re tired of “ordinary” piano sample instruments, Mule Piano might bring you the variety you need.”

FAQ :

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mule Piano?

It’s a piano Kontakt library includes 23 niche piano instruments. And nearly 3000 recorded tones coming from the piano. It offers a palette of unusual sounds, with optional additional sound-shaping tools.

Does the world need another piano library?

Yes, it needed one more! This one.

This a radical reimagining of what a piano can be. With an array of extended techniques, mechanical preparations, and custom articulations, this Kontakt instrument dismantles traditional expectations.

What is a prepared piano?

A prepared piano is a piano that has had its sound altered by placing various objects on or between the strings, hammers, or dampers.

What makes Mule Piano special from other prepared piano sample libraries?

Unlike some prepared piano libraries, the Mule Piano’s patches are designed to be coherent and playable across the entire keyboard, providing a consistent type of piano sound.

The Mule Pianos use the same kind of preparation on all the strings, instead of a wide range of sounds (ala. the John Cage techniques) in each patch. Making them more coherent and playable.

Each patch is imbued with a character, richness, and unique authenticity.

How do I make organic-sounding music with a computer?

To start off with a library like Mule-piano would definitively help! it offers clunky thuds, metallic pings, droning resonance, and all the unpredictable nuance of physical preparation. Load it in Kontakt and sculpt beauty from entropy.

Where can I download Kontakt?

Who is it for?

These are prepared pianos, but prepared in a way that you can play with the same kind of sound over the whole piano keyboard.

Built for those who defy norms, this experimental piano library transforms the acoustic grand piano into a playground of unusual piano sounds. Perfect for free thinking, genre defying composers looking to inject their work with organic sounds in the cross section between weirdly tuned-percussion and piano.

Composers embarking on this sophisticated journey are met with an exquisite raw palette of piano sounds and experimental piano timbres, resonating with unparalleled uniqueness.
