We started, quite reasonably, with a few traditional wooden percussion instruments. But then came the boxes. And the abandoned drawers. Then it was peculiar wooden enclosures, resonating objects of dubious origin, and things that were, just highly slappable pieces of timber. We had to sample absolutely all of it.
The result is Knock on Wood, our new percussion library for Kontakt. It is a gloriously organic, deeply satisfying collection of thumps, thwacks, clacks, and resonant booms, captured from the vast and slightly absurd wooden menagerie we managed to hoard.
Buoyed by our success indoors, we found ourselves wandering into the nearby forest, armed with contact microphones and the sort of mild, unfounded optimism that usually precedes a light drizzle.
We attached our mics to hollowed-out trunks and damp bark, essentially eavesdropping on the inner life of trees. The sounds we captured out there, deep, ancient, and quietly astonishing, are included as a rather wonderful bonus.
And, because we are generally quite fond of the woods, no trees were harmed in the making of this library.
(Though a few studio drawers may never look at us the same way again.)
